8-28-05 Accenture Chicago Triathlon - Photo Gallery (Chicago, IL)

A field of 7,600 triathletes, competed in Sunday's Accenture Chicago Triathlon going for an official World Record as the world's largest triathlon. An annual tradition since 1983, the Chicago lakefront course gave participants the opportunity to swim 1.5K in Lake Michigan's Monroe Harbor, bike 40K along scenic Lake Shore Drive, and run 10K through Chicago's Museum Campus and Grant Park. Pros competed for $50,000 in prize money and the championship title. Over 150,000 spectators were estimated in attendance.

New Zealander Hamish Carter won the men's professional category, with a time of 01:49:55. Hunter Kemper of the U.S. placed second just 4 seconds behind, with 2004 Olympic silver medalist Beran Docherty of New Zealand finishing 15 seconds after Kemper.

On the women's side, Becky Lavelle of the U.S. had a minute and a half lead, completing the course in 2:02:08, with Canadian Samantha McGlone finishing at 2:03:39 and two-time Accenture Chicago Triathlon winner Barb Lindquist finishing 20 seconds behind.

Jessi Stensland, from San Diego, CA, finished 8th overall in the Pro Women's field with a time of 2:07:51 and was ready to re-hydrate at the finish.

Top local triathlete, Jennifer Harrison, from Dundee, IL, finished 4th overall in the Elite Women's division with a time of 2:17:27. This was a new category added this year for top age groupers.

Despite starting in the 50th wave, Chicago's Mark Hauser had one of the fastest swims of the day, 20:55, and finished 4th overall in the International Distance Age Group division with a time of 2:05:26. Next to him is Jeanne Fendley from Austin, TX, who completed the race in 2:49:44.

Coming into Museum Campus runners encounter a slight uphill to the finish at Columbus Drive, but the view of the city is beautiful!

Steve Kramer finished the international distance event in 2:38:52 with CNA Insurance teammates and first timers, Eric Eckerman (2:43:08) and Matt Knoop (2:54:22).

Finding family and loved ones at the end of a race is not always easy, but this member of the TriMasters club had no problem. The TriMasters Club had a strong presence at the McDonald's kids race on Saturday and then many of the group leaders did Sunday's race.

Sometimes, all it takes is a bag of ice on your head to cool off as is demonstrated by Valerie Willuweit from Chicago who finished in 3:34:45.
