Riders were greeted with a chilly morning low of 9 degrees Fahrenheit
and an early afternoon high of 23 degrees at the Illinois Cyclocross
State Championships on Dec. 3. Despite the frigid temperatures at
Chicago's Montrose Park, cyclocross racers took on a challenging
course that saw riders in mountain to cross bikes with select technical
tires in order to maneuver through the snow. The championship was
also the fourth and final race of the Chicago Cyclocross Cup Racing
Series.
The course favored the technically strong rider. The most difficult section
was the uphill pavement section where crossers battled a strong
headwind then pin turned into a tight snow path.
Within the course there was a spaghetti-like pin frozen tundra turn that
forced riders to dismount, run up a short hill, snake via a tunnel and face
another short hill followed by a fast section that brought riders back to
the start/finish area.
Corie Berrigan (Team Kenda Tire) won the women's 1/2/3 race and title
of state champion. Holly Klug (Killjoy) finished in second place after
winning the previous three Chicago Cyclocross Cup races. David
Sachs (Vision
Quest) won the Men Pro 1 & 2. Berrigan is no stranger to state
championships as in 1998 she was the women's champion in the
Wisconsin Cyclocross State Championship. On Nov. 19 this year, she
won the
ICCS Series Women's Open in Iowa. Both Sachs and Berrigan took the
gold
medal for the State of Illinois.
