Point Rock Park in Mount Carroll was the scene for the fourth annual
Great Carroll County Cycling Event. Racers sped through Carroll
County and vied for winning position within their class. Tyger Johnson,
famed cyclist won overall and within the Human Powered Vehicle class
(recumbent bicycle) with a time just under 3 hours to finish the 62 mile
race. The day was windy and hot which slowed racers down this year.
Several suffered from heat exhaustion and one required medical
assistance from paramedics.
There were more racers this year than ever before, but fewer tour riders
due to the heat and possible rain forecast. The sanctioning race
organization, American Bicycle Racing National Director, Bob Lundgren
attended again this year and helped out with timing, traffic control, and
rule enforcement. "This year the event was very well organized and
went very smoothly," Lundgren said.
This is the only single lap long distance race in the Midwest and is a
European styled race. Racers travel over various road surfaces and
through the scenic towns through most of Carroll County.
Hosts of the race, the Carroll County Cycling Club prepare for the race
in part by traveling over the route and sweeping the loose gravel and
debris from curves and turns and placing large signs at each turn for the
sixty-two mile route.
Carroll County Sheriff Jeff Doran organized and coordinated police
efforts which included four escorts, one for each wave of racers, and
numerous traffic control officers at various heavy traffic intersections
along the route. This service was critical in providing security and
smooth racing conditions.
Cyclists enjoyed a delicious pasta dinner prepared and served by Jim
Shaw of Shaw's Grocery store in Mount Carroll.
Fat Jack's Barbeque served his famous Sloppy Taters and Pulled Pork
sandwiches. There were numerous craft, antique, and art vendors
selling their wares. Live music was provided by the Dan Volls Band.
