High noon. High time you learned some history. History can be staring you in the face, but you just keep on running, oblivious to everything except the next stoplight as you negotiate city streets on the way to the lakefront.
That was until this year when the Neighborhood Fun Run Series began from Fleet Feet Sports' Lincoln Square Store. The Sunday noon runs commenced on Jan. 27 and continue each Sunday before winding up on March 17.
Led by runner and historical buff Chuck Betzhold, the remaining runs in the series are as follows:
Feb. 10 - The Historic Sheridan Park and Uptown Neighborhoods;
Feb. 17 - North Side Colleges and Parks;
Fedb. 24 - Historic Boulevard Neighborhoods.
March 3 - The Chicago River Corridor: Heavy Industry to Posh Condos;
March 10 - The Far End of the Running Path: Jackson Park;
March 17 - Running on the Chicago River Flood Plain (weather permitting).
Distances for the runs are 4-6 miles, and all begin at Fleet Feet Lincoln Square, 4555 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago. Additional group leaders allow for several different paces. There are point-of-interest stops throughout the runs.
Route maps and informational handouts are provided for each run. Runners are advised to dress warmly and bring full water bottles. Gear can be stored at Fleet Feet during the runs, and runners will be transported back to the store after each run.
The series began on Jan. 27 with a tour of the Old Lakewood Train Line, and continued with the North Branch of the Chicago River, Feb. 3.
