Northwestern University sets new national swim record

The Northwestern Wildcats set a national relay record at the NCAA Men's Division I Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday evening.

Seniors Matt Grevers and Michael Alexandrov along with juniors Kyle Bubolz and and Bruno Barbic blazed to a 3:04.40 in the Men's 400-yard Medley Relay becoming the only other Wildcat squad since the early 1930s to accomplish such an honor. The previous nationals record of 3:04.47 was held by the Texas Longhorns from March 27, 2003. The same four Wildcats finished fourth in the 200-yard frestyle relay with a 1:16.65 earlier in the evening.

Individually, Grevers was just touched out in the 200-yard Indivdual Medley by Adam Ritter of Arizona; 1:41.72 to Grevers's 1:41.96. Alexandrov finished 6th in 1:45.26. Barbic took 12th in the 50-yard freestyle blazing to a 19:73 whild sophmore Eric Nilsson took 16th in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:21.66.

The Wildcats are currently tied for 4th place after the first day of competition.
