USMS national records set at TYR Grand Prix in Chicago
By Mark Urban December 3, 2007 Chicago Athlete
Kevin Doak, 26, of Michigan Masters set two United States Masters
Swimming national backstroke records at the TYR Grand Prix this past
weekend at the University of Chicago's Myers-McLoraine pool. Doak
blazed to a 55.65 in the 100-meter backstroke (short-course) on
Saturday then returned on Sunday for more. His 50-meter backstroke
time of 25.15 bettered the old mark of 26.00 set by Michael Kanner in
1995. Doak says he is happy with his times but was hoping for a world
record.
One hundred twenty swimmers attended the University of Chicago
Swimming Fundraiser including 1952 and 1956 Olympic backstroker,
Yoshi Oyakawa. Oyakawa, 74, is a native of Hawaii and currently swims
for the Ohio Masters Swim Club. The swimming legend was inducted
into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1973.
Meet Director Mark Gill (39) of Swim Kentucky says he hopes this three-
meet series will inspire swimmers to gather together for some great
competition well into the future. "We not only get the local population
but out-of-state competitors as well," says Gill. "We hope to create a co-
operative meet atmosphere that feeds on itself." The two other previous
meets in the series took place in Indianapolis, Indiana and Louisville,
Kentucky.
