Madison, WI--January 26, 2004--The WSDC announced
today that favorable snow conditions in Central Wisconsin
indicate that all skiing, snowshoe racing and quadrathlon
competitions will take place. "Officially there are eight inches of snow in Wausau," said
WAOW-TV meterologist Chad Franzen. "The National
Weather service has predicted another two inches today,
two inches later this week and another three inches over the
weekend, with light snow showers throughout the following
week. The Nine-mile ski area opened a week ago and it's
been packed down with use, but the snow will be
substantial today and provide a good base by the end of the
week," said reported Franzen.
"If we get the snow that's been predicted, all Nordic skiing,
snowshoe racing and quadrathlons competitions will run as
scheduled. If we don't get the snow, the events will run, but
route modifications may be necessary. We'll announce any
route changes on or before Wednesday, Feb. 4," said Ryan
Richards, vice president of operations for the WSDC.
Nordic skiing, snowshow racing and the quadrathlon have
been cancelled the last two years due to lack of snow, and
participants in those events have waited until the last minute
to register. WSDC encourages everyone interested in
competing in these events to register now at
SportsInWisconsin.com. The Nordic skiing competition is a
qualifier for the Birkebeiner, held every year in Cable.
The Badger State Games runs two weekends this year.
Some youth hockey and bowling take place Jan 31-Feb 1.
All other sports including new sports indoor archery and
freestyle skiing, take place Feb. 6-8.
