The Banco Popular Chicago Half Marathon presented by the Illinois
Agents of Farmers Insurance has reached its 10,000 cap and has
closed its registration in record time. The race field is full nearly five
whole weeks before race day, earlier than any year in the event's 10-
year history. "The number of runners who have chosen to participate in our event is
absolutely phenomenal," said Susan Nicholl, General Manager of the
race. "The record number of registrants is a fitting tribute for our 10th
anniversary race and we're extremely excited."
The record registration numbers are evidence of the exploding
popularity of the 13.1 mile half marathon distance. The Banco Popular
Chicago Half Marathon field has grown nearly 75 percent over the last
two years, including a 35 percent jump from 2005 to 2006.
Complimenting returning features such as Kid's Fest and the Finish Line
Festival, several new enhancements mark the 10th anniversary race.
The event recently announced Special Olympics Chicago as its
preferred charitable partner, and the race has been designated asa
CARA circuit race. Additionally, Chicago Roadrunners, a 14-week half
marathon training program directed by four-time Olympian and New
York City Marathon Champion Rod Dixon, debuted in July.
