Registration is moving at a rapid pace toward the
race field capacity of 12,500 runners for the Sept. 9 Banco Popular
Chicago Half Marathon, prompting event organizers to expect
a second consecutive sellout. The 2006 event sold out well in advance
of
race day. Touted by Runner's World magazine as one of the Top 10 Half
Marathons in the
United States for two straight years, registrations for the 2007 event are
more than 100 percent ahead of last year. The record registration
numbers
are evidence of the exploding popularity of the 13.1 mile half marathon
distance. The Banco Popular Chicago Half Marathon has steadily grown
since
its inception in 1996, and the event has become one of the most
anticipated
long distance races in the Midwest.
The event's official training program, Chicago Roadrunners, begins on
June
16. The 13-week training program is designed to help to help both
experienced and novice runners, joggers and those interested in
becoming
more fit reach their goal in a fun and educational setting. Saturday
morning
training runs start on June 16.
With record crowds expected for this year's event, participants are
strongly
encouraged to take advantage of the race day roundtrip Shuttle Service,
provided by the Chicago Sport and Social Club. Roundtrip shuttles will
once
again pick up and drop off from four locations: Kincade's Bar and Grill in
Lincoln Park (950 W. Armitage); New Balance Chicago (2369 N. Clark,
at
Fullerton); the Addison Red Line 'L Stop in Wrigleyville (at Sheffield);
and
The Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza (350 N. Orleans St.).
Also returning for the second year is the Banco Popular Chicago Half
Marathon's partnership with Special Olympics Chicago. In 2006, the
generosity of race participants helped to raise more than $30,000 for the
Chicago-based charitable organization.
