CHICAGO, IL - The 9th annual Chicago Half Marathon, slated
for Sunday, September 25, is expecting more than 9,000 runners to step
off at the Museum of Science and Industry's start/finish line. The 13.1
mile course winds through Jackson Park, the historic University of
Chicago campus in the Hyde Park community and continues along
south Lake Shore Drive with spectacular views of Lake Michigan. Not only is the Chicago Half Marathon the longest running half-
marathon in Chicago, it is one of the largest half-marathons in the
United States as well as one of the most anticipated long distance races
in the Chicago running community.
"We are very excited to attract runners of so many different experience
levels. For some, this is their first attempt at a longer distance run; and
for veteran runners, this is a race not to be missed. We strive to deliver
an excellent race day experience for all," noted Race Director Susan
Nichol.
This year, the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) has
designated the Chicago Half as one of their Circuit Races. Additionally,
a 10-week training program, managed by CARA, has been added.
Ann Marie Houlihan, President of CARA, added, "We're happy to have a
well-managed race like the Chicago Half Marathon on our roster. This is
a destiny race for many Chicago runners - a stepping stone to the
LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon for some; for others, this is the ultimate
achievement."
The Chicago Half Marathon - a USA Track & Field sanctioned event with
a USATF certified course - will serve as the USATF State Championship
for the distance. The spectator-friendly course is considered to be the
'perfect distance' for anyone who runs 5Ks, 10Ks or is in training for the
LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, which is two weeks later on October 9.
Weekend highlights include a 2 Day Health & Fitness EXPO on Friday
and Saturday (September 23-24) at the Merchandise Mart and
discounted room rates at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza, across the street.
There will be medals for all finishers and shuttle bus service to the race
(for a minimal fee) provided by Chicago Sport and Social Clubs. There
will also be live entertainment along the race route as well as a huge
post race party at the Finish Line Festival on the grounds of the Museum
of Science & Industry.
