7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7 -- Dick Pond Athletics, 303 N. Second St., St. Charles, 630-587-0745. Free Marathon Clinic, "7 Steps to a Successful Marathon," featuring Dr. Steven Ginsberg. Includes last-minute strategies for an "enjoyable" 26.2 miles, free computerized spinal assessment, visualization and mental prep tips, what to eat and drink, what to wear, managing pre-race stress.

Wednesday & Thursday at 6 p.m., Oct. 8-9; -- Universal Sole, 3254 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, 773-868-0893. Meet Sandra Khannouchi, wife and coach of Khalid Khannouchi, the four-time winner of the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. Sandra will speak and answer questions.

6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 -- Vertel's, 24 S. Michigan, Chicago, 312-683-9600. The store will host a reception for 150-200 runners from France.

6-7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 -- Fleet Feet Sports Piper's Alley, 210 W. North Ave., Chicago, 312-587-3338. Coach Roy Benson, leading expert on heart rate zone training, coach and best selling author, will be on hand to discuss and answer questions on training with heart rate monitors.

7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 -- Fleet Feet Sports Piper's Alley, 210 W. North Ave., Chicago, 312-587-3338. Meet Meb Keflezighi, the American 10,000-meter record holder (27:13:89). This USA Nike athlete will appear until 8 p.m. for a question and answer session and a meet and greet.

11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11 -- Fleet Feet Sports Piper's Alley, 210 W. North Ave., Chicago, 312-587-3338. Meet 1972 Olympic gold medalist Frank Shorter. Presented by New Balance, Shorter will appear until 1 p.m. for a meet and greet and photo opportunity.

Wednesday-Saturday, Oct. 8-11 -- Runner's Edge, 335 Ridge Rd., Wilmette, 847-853-8531, and Runner's Edge, 111 E. Cook St. Libertyville, 847-549-1108. Come in during regular store hours and make posters to support your favorite runner(s) on poster board, courtesy of Saucony.

Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 9-11 -- Naperville Running Company, 20 W. Jefferson, Naperville, 630-357-1900. MI adidas, which lets you have certain adidas models customized for stability, color as well as have your name stitched on the shoe, will be available during regular store hours. Shoes will be sent to you about three weeks later. You can call ahead for an appointment.
