Mayor's Fitness Council Urges Chicagoans To "Move" on May 5
From press release. May 3, 2004
30 Minutes Can Make All the Difference
Get in the spirit during "Chicago Moves Day," sponsored by
the Mayor's Fitness Council. Residents and visitors of all
ages can work out for 30 minutes during "Chicago Moves
Day," choose from a walk, run, in-line skating, kick-boxing,
stretching, cycling, or a sport and it's all FREE at 11 a.m.
May 5, on Daley Plaza... (corner of Washington & Clark
Streets)... so get that body moving! Remember any movement is better than nothing... whether
you are a weekend warrior, devoted exercise enthusiast or
just want to keep fit, "...the key is getting into a fitness
routine for at least 30 minutes, three times a week," says Dr.
Joel Press, director of the Center for Spine, Sports and
Occupational Rehabilitation. "In previous years it has been
noted that individuals should sustain a certain heart rate for
20-30 minutes, about three days a week. The heart is a
muscle and studies show just being physically active in
daily life has tremendous benefits to your overall health."
The Mayor's Fitness Council asks teachers and business
leaders to inspire those around them, the purpose of
"Chicago Moves Day" is to draw the attention to the fact that
everyone, everywhere should be aware of the importance of
physical activity. "Once you experience the satisfaction of getting your heart
pumping and your muscles moving, we hope that you make
personal fitness a regular part of your life. All it takes is 30
minutes a day and you're on the way to better health," said
Colleen Lammel, of The Mayor's Fitness Council. Lammel
says that select Chicago Park District fitness centers will be
free of charge on Chicago Moves Day. For more
