Chicago Moves Day Offers Citywide Celebration of
Healthy Bodies
Mayor's Fitness Council Hosts Free Fitness for Thousands
In a bold effort that guides Chicagoans to healthier
lifestyles, the Mayor's Fitness Council will host Chicago
Moves Day on Tuesday, May 17th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. on Daley Plaza. The annual citywide fitness initiative,
honored in 2004 with a Mayoral proclamation, offers special
workouts led by teams from Bally Total Fitness, the
Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, Chicago Fitness Plus,
Chicago Sport and Social Club, Crunch Fitness, East Bank
Club, Equinox Fitness, Xport Fitness, V103, WGCI and
YMCA of Greater Metropolitan Chicago. "Chicago Moves Day was designed to highlight the wealth of
fitness opportunities offered across the city," said Mayor's
Fitness Council Chair Colleen Lammel-Harmon. "By
creating awareness and offering a venue to take that first
step, Chicagoans can steadily move toward better physical
health." The Mayor's Fitness Council hopes to pique the interest of
more than one thousand Chicago Loop employees,
residents and tourists with free classes in kickboxing,
stretching, yoga, cycling, in-line skating and a variety of
sports. Designed to get the body moving, Chicago Moves
Day promises to provide exciting alternatives in fitness as
well as literature and professional advice from area trainers
on how to get motivated and maintain a healthy fitness
regimen. The festivities will not only attract fitness
opportunity seekers to Daley Plaza, but also to a variety of
health clubs across the city that will offer free passes and
fitness classes for the day. The Mayor's Fitness Council is a nonprofit, volunteer
organization whose mission is to encourage Chicagoans to
eat better and move more, thus leading to a healthier
lifestyle. Through a variety of educational and motivational
materials, activities and public appearances, the Council
strives to increase awareness of the importance of exercise
and good health, and to promote and encourage the
development of a physically active and healthy lifestyle for
Chicagoans of all ages.
