Commuter Challenge Encourages Employees to Bike to Work
June 7, 2005 From Press Release
With support from the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, businesses and
organizations in Chicago and the suburbs are encouraging their
employees to
make at least part of their commute to work June 11-17 on bicycle.
Businesses and organizations achieving the highest percentage of
bicycle
commuters receive awards and cheesecake from Eli's Cheesecake. The
challenge
is divided into three categories (business/non-profit, public agency,
bicycle related business), and four divisions based on the size of the
business or organization (5-24, 25-99, 100-499, 500+ employees). In
2004,
more than 1,000 employees from 76 businesses and organizations
accepted the
challenge. The Chicago region is home to some of the worst traffic congestion in
the
United States. Commuting by bicycle offers a great way to combine
exercise
and transportation. Bicycles are a clean form of transportation and are
healthy both for the user and the roads on which they ride. Bike riders
also
avoid the high cost of gasoline and car maintenance, while arriving to
work
alert and feeling refreshed. Organizations can sign up online at www.biketraffic.org as an entire
company
or simply as one department or division. Each organization receives a
packet
of materials, including maps and ,,how too/oo guides, that help make the
commute
easier. Organizations are honored for their participation with an awards
luncheon in July sponsored by Chicago,s bicycle component
manufacturer,
SRAM, and the Fairmont Chicago. The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation
is also
available to give on-site presentations on bicycle commuting to work. Founded in 1985, the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation has as its
mission to
improve the bicycling environment and thereby the quality of life in our
region. With more than 5,000 members, CBF works toward its mission
by
promoting bicycling safety, education and facilities. We also encourage
use
of the bicycle as an energy-efficient, economical and nonpolluting form
of
transportation and as a healthful and enjoyable form of recreation. For more information on the Commuter Challenge and how to
participate:
