XXX Racing-AthletiCo Phenom Garners First American
Medal Since 2001Verona, Italy - XXX Racing-AthletiCo's Rebecca Much put
the cycling world on notice Monday by racing to a silver
medal in Women's Junior Individual Time Trial on the
opening day of the 2004 World Championships, in Verona,
Italy. Much is a recent graduate of Chicago's St. Ignatius
College Prep and a currently a freshman at Fort Lewis
College in Durango, Colo.
The young American finished second to Tereza Hurikova of
the Czech Republic in the 15.75-kilometer (9.8 mile) time
trial, which was marked by rolling course with an uphill start.
Much clocked a time of 22.19.47, just 5.37 seconds behind
Hurikova and a slight .30 seconds ahead of bronze-medal
winner Amanda Spratt of Australia. Her medal-winning
performance marked the first top-three finish at the World
Championships for the United States in any discipline since
2001, when American Danny Pate won the Under-23 men's
time trial in Portugal.
Much will don her Stars and Stripes jersey again on Friday,
October 1, to compete in the Women's Junior Road Race.
Friday's event will cover 73.75 kilometers (45.8 miles) as
the competitors complete five laps of a challenging course
that includes a significant climb on each circuit.
The silver medal in Verona is the latest in a string of
milestone performances for Much in 2004. She earned gold
medals in both the Junior Time Trial and Junior Road Race
at the National Cycling Championships in Park City, Utah,
on August 19 and 23, respectively. Competing for XXX
Racing-AthletiCo, Much also picked up a pair of
"Superweek" victories in July against
professionally-dominated fields, winning the Bensonville
Criterium in Bensonville, Ill., and the MGA Proving Grounds
Road Race in Burlington, Wisc.
