THE NEWS
Chris Wehrman, 27, of Chicago, takes his 2:17:50 marathon PR up north to the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon on Sunday morning. He will be in good company. Five other runners in the field have gone as fast or faster. Jackson Omweri, 27, a Kenyan living in Minnesota, appears to be the favorite, based on his 2:12, run in 1999. On the women's side, Carol LeGate, 40, of Green Bay, and Madeline Tormoen, 41, of Colorado seem to be best on paper. There also are half-marathon and 5K races. For information: www.cellcomgreenbaymarathon.com

Sarah Tillotson, who rides for the ABD Cycling Team out of Winfield, placed sixth overall this past weekend at the very difficult and competitive Joe Martin Stage Race in Fayetteville, AK. Tillotson ended up sixth of 23 women from the U.S., Canada and Australia who survived the grueling four-stage event over three days. Here is what Tillotson and teammate Kelly Benjamin went through: Friday 70 miles with 3,000 feet of climbing; Saturday morning 69 miles with 4,500 feet of climbing; Saturday afternoon 2.5-mile time trial, entirely uphill on a 6.8 percent grade; Sunday Criterium on a 1.2-mile course with one tough hill each lap. If you missed it in Monday's Sun-Times, Lake Forest High School swim coach Lea Maurer, has been cleared by USA Swimming of what has been called "recruiting violations." She had been suspended for six months because of a letter publicizing an informational meeting about forming a "community-based program for Lake Forest and Lake Bluff athletes. It was sent to members of the Lake Forest Swim Club, a USA Swimming member club. Maurer, who coached Lake Forest to boys and girls state high school championships this year, is no longer suspended.
