October 15, Kailua-Kona, HI - Germany's Faris Al-Sultan and Switzerland's Natascha Badmann won the 2005 Ford Ironman World Championship in Hawaii this past weekend. Al-Sultan finished the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run in 8:14:17, and Badmann, marking her sixth win, finished in 9:09:30.

Interesting . . .
Al-Sultan spent his final four weeks before leaving for Kona living and training in San Diego. He showed his casual nature, arriving with his bike packed not in a hard travel case but a cardboard box. His clothes, too, were stuffed in the box.

RACE REPORT - From Wisconsin Off-Road Series Final

"The morning of the race I was nervous. I am usually not nervous for a race, but this was big time. The local paper had been running press for the last three days, lots of money on the line, and a stacked Midwest field. The race started with a mad dash 400 yards into the race for the Holeshot prime. Doug Swanson (Plymouth, MN) from Trek Midwest was first, I was second, and Brian Eppen (Iowa City, IA) was third. From that point on it was full speed ahead."

AGE GRADING EXPLAINED

In case you ever wondered, here's how age-grading is determined: The World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA), created tables to allow comparison of performances across age and gender groups. The tables cover ages 8 to 99 and distances from 1 mile to 100k. A table entry is a "standard" time for that age and distance. Age graded points are assigned by dividing a runners finish time into the standard time and then multiplying by 1,000.
