EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY COACH BOB PARKS ON ROSA PARKS:

"Rosa Parks (no relation, but I would like to claim her) died this week. She was a great person who wouldn't give up her seat in segregated Alabama in 1955 and brought about the elimination of segregation in the south. Former Pres. Bill Clinton, at her funeral, said that he and his white friends could then sit in the back of the bus if they so desired. This brought back memories of 1952 when five f us on the EMU (then MSNC) team, Bill Perry, Glenn Davis, Bruce Jacobs, Marv Staplin and I decided to go south for spring vacation and run in the Southern Relays in Birmingham, AL. We drove cars from the auto plants at Willow Run for some Alabama dealers and headed south in a caravan. It was quite an experience. We drove Kaisers, Fraziers, and Henry J's, three long-obsolete models (if I had a lot of money, I would now buy one for an antique car collection in commemoration of our historic trip). When we got to Alabama, we piled into a bus and sat in the rear seat. The bus didn't move and everyone was looking at five white boys sitting in the back end. Finally the driver came back and told us to move up or he would call the police. I guess we could have been like Rosa Parks and stay put, but we had no desire to be thrown in a southern jail in those days, so we moved up toward the front after daring the driver to eject us. The blacks then moved to the back of the bus and smiled at us for our affrontary actions toward the driver."

OFF-ROAD ROLLER SKI TIME TRIAL

This just in from our Editor at Large, Bob Richards, who many may know as "Mr. Cross Country Ski." He has organized his 3rd annual Limestone Loppet which will be this Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton. For the off-road roller ski time trial, skiers will start every 30 seconds and roller- ski a 9K crushed limestone course. Race starts next to west parking lot off of Herrick Road. According to Bob, "We may have the worst snow in the Midwest, but I think we have some of the best roller-skiing, particularly off-road. The event is a great tuneup for when the snow does fall." For more detail you can email him at bobnanrun@sbcglobal.net.
