RACE REPORT

ABD Indoor Time Trial Series Race #1
Courtesy of Mike Ebert, ABD Cycle Club

Over 200 riders participated in the first race of the ABD Cycle Club's Indoor Time Trial Series in Wheaton on Sunday, January 16. Not only did the previous attendance record fall, but so did the fastest 10K time of the last six years. It was just five years ago that Reid Mumford of ABD became the first rider to break the 14-minute barrier on the flat, Computrainer course, and on Sunday Mark Swartzendruber of Indy Velo-Team Delta shaved another 13 seconds off that record to post a 13:43.6 with an average power output close to 440 watts. Susan Talbot of the Degree Team was the fastest woman of the day, posting a 16:19.2.

A total of 206 riders braved the sub-zero temperatures on Sunday to make it to the Wheaton Park District's Parks Plus Facility where indoor racing weather was a perfect 68 degrees, as usual. This year ABD expanded the number of "head-to-head" Computrainer stations they are running from five to seven, which allows for a total of 14 riders competing in each time slot. "After the great response to the first event, we'll be tightening up our time slots to allow for at least an additional 28 riders at each event," said ABD vice-president Mary Lee Geraghty.

Second place in the top Amateur 1 and 2 category was Tom Letzel of Redline Racing, who has competed in the series every year. This year he convinced his teammate, Demian March, into racing against him. March also happens to be married to Letzel's wife's twin sister - suddenly there's a whole new intensity to the term "family feud". (For the record, Letzel won this round).
