ATHLETE MAKEOVER UPDATE

You read about Jenna Wasmuth -- the Motivational Makeover subject in our March issue (www.chicagoaa.com/features/ MakeoverMarch05.html) -- and we promised to follow her progress from couch potato to full fledged athlete throughout the year. Well, the change has begun as she finished the Multiplex Indoor Triathlon on March 12 and sent us the following recap. At the beginning of every month we'll let you know how she's doing. If you want to send her words of encouragement, please email them to editorial@chicagoaa.com.

I finished my first triathlon running--not walking, crawling, passed out or worse yet . . . last! That's probably the most exciting news I can report. This is pretty good considering that during my first training session, back In January, I had to excuse myself from the class midway through because I thought I was going puke. I left the gym that night feeling like I had gotten myself in way over my head. I was sure this entire journey was going to end early and that in no time at all I'd once again be eating cookies for dinner.

But, as we all know, time passes quickly, and before I knew it, it was time to compete in my first triathlon. When I arrived at the Multiplex for the tri I was confident that I would at least finish and hopeful that I wouldn't finish in last place. I achieved that goal. Woohoo! I'm looking forward to the April triathlons because I now know what to expect. My goal for the April 9th triathlon is to increase my distances by any amount. My goal for the April 16th EXTREME indoor triathlon is just to finish... running. Not walking, crawling, passed out, or, you guessed it, LAST.

Here are a few things I've learned over the last couple months:
1. I want to stay active for the rest of my life so that I don't ever have to experience a "first class" again.
2. I have to take things one day/workout at a time or I will go crazy!
3. GU is disgusting and may cause my early retirement.
4. Do not celebrate completing your first triathlon by washing down a burger with a bloody mary (I was in a food coma for 3 days).

Talk to you next month!
Jenna

IL WEB SITE HELPS CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS ASK FOR COMPLETE STREETS

The League of Illinois Bicyclists (LIB) has unveiled its "Complete Streets" Web site. If you bike, run or walk -- this is an easy way to provide input on upcoming road projects near you. After learning details about an individual project, the user may fill out a quick survey on existing conditions and what should be done to accommodate bikes and pedestrians (that's walkers and runners). LIB then forwards their comments and a cover letter to the road-building agency and its top elected official.
You can check out the new Web site:
