ANOTHER BIRKIE UNDER HIS BELT

Chicago Athlete's Editor at Large, Bob Richards, completed his 25th American Birkebeiner 51K Ski Marathon. Here's what the Birkie veteran had to say about this year's race:

It was quite a race. As you probably know, it was frigid at the start (minus 4 for the elite Wave at 8:20, probably zero to 2 above for me in Wave 2 at 8:40. Cold snow is slow snow, and even with good wax, I was suffering, especially on some on the monster uphills on the first part of the course where the sun had not made any kind of an appearance. The snow was cold, dry and squeaky as we climbed and descended, gradually reaching the high point of the course at about 14K. It didn't really get much easier for another 14K. Fortunately by about 28K, it began to warm up. I knew my skis would respond and they did.

It was a great second half. But many of us used a ton of energy the first half, more than usual and it took away some of the snap in my skate motion. I was back in the standings a bit from last year even with the faster time, but am very satisfied. And, I finished with a smile on my face!

Kudos to Bob and everyone who raced this year! For complete results, check out:
