U OF C'S YEZEFSKI SPRINTS TO VICTORY AT COLLEGIATE ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Chicago's Todd Yezefski took home an individual title at the 2005 Collegiate Road Cycling National Championships on Friday, May 13 in Lawrence, KS.

Yezefski bested the 69-rider divison II field in the 70-minute criterium. On the bell lap, two separate pileups claimed the hopes of several riders, but Yezefski emerged unscathed and took the sprint ahead of Colorado College teammates Joshua Gewirtz and Cody Powell in a photo finish. The following day, Yezefski returned to place 11th in the 84-mile road race, earning him a second- place finish in the overall individual Omnium results with 203 total points. Brent Bookwalter from Lees McRae was the overall winner with 222 points, and Sam Johnson from Whitman College placed third with 179 points.

Yezefski's hard work in both races etted the University of Chicago a 12th place finish in the overall division II team standings.

SPIRIT OF RACINE FILLING UP FAST

According to race organizers, The 2005 Spirit of Racine Triathlon is near full capacity. This year's field is limited to 1,500 participants. The event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run. Professional athletes are competing for a share of the $25,000 prize purse.

ON THE ROAD - WEEKEND RESULTS:

U.S. elite duathletes Josh Beck (Carlisle, PA - 2:26:20) and Andrea Ratkovic (Norman, OK - 2:48:34) won the elite races at the 2005 Powerman Ohio on Sunday in Mansfield, OH. The race, which consisted of an 8K run, 57K bike and 8K run served as the USAT Mideast Region Long Course Duathlon Championship. In the age group race, John McGovern (41; Kingston, NY) took the overall men's title in 2:35:41. Elizabeth Fedofsky (29; Naperville, IL) won the women's overall title in 3:00:14. FRIENDS OF BLOOMINGDALE TRAIL PLAN SPRING CLEAN-UP

The Bloomingdale Line is the elevated, unused railroad between North and Armitage Avenues that runs through Bucktown, Humboldt Park, Logan Square and Wicker Park. The Friends of Bloomingdale Trail hope it will someday be a park and a multi-use trail. GREEN BAY HAPPY WITH MARATHON'S ECONOMIC IMPACT

The annual Cellcom Green Bay Marathon, which will be held on Sunday, May 22, does not rise to the level of a Green Bay Packers weekend, with an estimated $3.5 million-plus impact on the local economy, but it does contribute $1.2 million according to a recent news release.

BICYCLING AMBASSADOR INITIATIVE EXPANDS TO SUBURBS

The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation recently introduced a bicycling ambassador to the western suburbs (Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest). Bicycling ambassadors promote bicycling safety to all road users, including bike riders, motorists, and pedestrians. Brian Kafel is the first west suburban bicycling ambassador. FUN FACT - FORMER POLE VAULTER WINS "SURVIVOR"

New York City firefighter Tom Westman who was voted the winner Sunday night on "Survivor Palou," attended Archbishop Molloy High School in NY where he was a member of the track team. In 1982, he held the school record in the pole vault, 4.42 meters/14 feet, 6 inches, which held for 20 years.

Chicago Endurance Sports will have their Program Kick-Off Party Sunday, May 22, at 10 a.m. at Fleet Feet Sports - Pipers Alley for those who want to learn how to run a 5K and 10K this summer.
