GOLDEN INCENTIVE

In a national teleconference, Chicago Athlete's Editor at Large, Bob Richards, spoke with the Olympic Marathon Team about the $1 Million Athens Marathon Challenge ($500,000 to a U.S. marathoner who wins gold in Athens), which was announced last week by the LaSalle Bank Chicago and ING New York City Marathons. Here is an except:

Bob Richards: Are any of you thinking of changing how you're going to approach the race because of that $500,000 carrot out there?

Jen Rhines: Well, I think it's a great incentive, but I don't think we'll probably be drastically changing our race plans, at least I won't. It's very warm over here. I think you have to stick with your original race plan.

Alan Culpepper: I know I could probably speak pretty confidently for all of us, at 22 or 23 or 24 miles, I guarantee none of us will be thinking about money. We'll be thinking about how to stay on our feet and keep moving forward. It's a nice added feature and it's a nice bonus that those things have come about and that the commitment is there. But if you're thinking about that, then you're probably not in the right state of mind.
