READER RACE REPORT

We often get race reports from our readers and this one was too good not to share. This is from Mary Lapeta. Her daughter, Eileen, was our July/August 2005 Clif Bar Athlete of the Month (www.chicagoaa.com/ features/athletesmonthJulyAug05.html). This is a little long, but you'll understand why she was picked for that honor.

Good morning Brenda, here's an update on USA Triathlon ITU Nationals held yesterday, August 7, in Bellingham, WA.

This race was well attended, and the junior female race included the Canadian national champion and the New Zealand national champion. There were about 20 starters in the 16-19 female category. It included a hill climb that was about 900 meters long and about a 18 + % grade. The rest of the loop was mostly downhill to get back to the base of the hill. The 5K run was held on a relatively flat 2.5K loop, and the juniors did two loops. Using ITU rules, anyone lapped is disqualified. It was a fast race, and some racers were disqualified for that reason.

Eileen finished the 16-19 junior female race in 9th place overall, 7th USA Junior female. She had a good swim and hooked up with Yasmine White from California for the bike leg, which was draft legal. Eileen says she felt great and was confident that she would make the podium if she could stay working with Yasmine on the bike. Yasmine went on to finish 3rd overall.

After about a mile, they came to a slight downhill, 90 degree turn. In the middle of the turn, Eileen's tire rolled out of her rear race wheel, and she went down. She got up, figured out what happened, and determined that she had a chance to continue since the tire wasn't flat. She pulled the wheel out of the bike frame where it had jammed, pulled the tire back onto the wheel, put the wheel back onto the bike, and took off again. She did this all in less than 4 minutes.

I was with the rest of the Illinois group back by the transition area, and when we saw Yasmine go by alone we knew something was wrong. When Eileen finally came by to complete her first loop, we saw that she had a determined look on her face, but that her whole right arm/shoulder was scraped and bloody. She was in about 12th place.

She finished the bike and even managed to pass some competitors to get to 9th place overall. She looked stiff and hurting when she started the run, but by the second loop she'd managed to block out some of the pain and she completed the 5K run in just over 20 minutes.

When she finished the race, the volunteers requested that ambulance workers bring a stretcher for her. Her tri-suit was shredded at her right hip, and she has severe road rash from her shoulder to her ankle. Her race number was 157, and the number one was scraped completely off her arm. After looking her over, the paramedics determined that she could leave on her own. When she was taking her things out of transition later, she found that she'd also cracked her bike helmet in three places.

Ed note: We thank Mary and all of our readers that share their race reports with us!
