SEEN ON THE WEB
BBC Web site re: Olympic Women's Triathlon:
"Like Kate Allen, Britain's Michelle Dillon also made up ground with the
third
fastest run of the day to finish sixth. But while Dillon was pleased with
her run,
she accused fellow-competitors of dirty tricks in the sea: "People were
pulling my
zipper down in the swim," she revealed. "They were obviously trying to
pull me
back, which is really disappointing. I couldn't believe people were doing
that.
Luckily the zipper didn't come down and once I got on to the bike I was
OK."

CLOSER
Here,s a note from Laura Andersen, Director, Trips for Kids Fox Valley
(a non-profit organization that provides mountain bike outings and
environmental
education for kids who would not otherwise be exposed to such
activities.)
"In July when we went to our storage barn to pick up the bikes for a ride
we
found that nine of them were missing. These were $300+ front
suspension
mountain bikes. The group that was coming to ride had 12 people; 10
kids and 2
adult staff members ready and willing to ride for the day. How ironic that
the
kids that were to go on the ride on Saturday were from a juvenile
offenders
program. We were devastated. We had to cancel and ride. We let
everybody we
knew, know about what happened and by Wednesday afternoon and
thanks to CAMBR
(Chicago Area Mountain Bikers Association) an email had gone out to
over 300
people in the biking industry along with newspaper and magazine
reporters.
Friday afternoon, I received a call from a lawyer in Geneva who
was appalled that something like this could happen. He asked if he
could
buy us nine new bikes. The Village Pedaler in South Elgin was
contacted about
the sizes, prices and availability and Geoff McGowen met me at the
shop
on Saturday with a check to cover the cost of the nine new bikes.
On Sunday, at a mountain bike race, held by Bicycles, Etc in Naperville,
the
Chicago Area Mountain Bikers Assocation presented us with a brand
new GT
mountain bike. Now we have 10 new bikes! The generosity doesn't
stop there.
Pacific-Cycle in Madison WI contacted us and offered four more new
bikes. We
started our losing nine bikes and received 14 new bikes. We couldn't be
happier.
We were able to call the agency and reschedule the ride for later
in the summer. The staff and kids were ecstatic."
