2005 IRONMAN WISCONSIN WRAP UP

Ukrainian Andriy Yastrebov won the first Ironman title of his career by claiming the men's title at the 2005 Ford Ironman Wisconsin with a time of nine hours, one minute and 34 seconds and Germany's Ute Mueckel won the third Ironman of her career with an overall time of 10 hours, 11 minutes and 22 seconds. The race was held this past Sunday, September 11, in Madison, WI.

On Tuesday night, over 10,000 runners donning yellow Nike technical race shirts raced up Columbus Avenue to begin the Nike Run Hit Wonder 5K and 10K races. It was a hot night once again with temperatures in the high 80s. The bands along the course included The Donnas, Foundations of Wayne, DJ Z Trip, Nina Sky and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TRACK CYCLING CHAMPS

CLIF BAR AND IMBA AWARD $6,000 IN GRANTS

CLIF Bar and the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) are pleased to announce the 12 winners of the 2005 Trail Preservation Grants program. The $500 grants will help clubs preserve and enhance trail access, promote environmental education, and inspire conservation.

The 2005 Trail Preservation grant winners from our region:

Peoria Area Mountain Bike Association (Peoria, IL)

The Peoria Area Mountain Bike Association will complete a stacked- loop trail system consisting of beginner, advanced, and ADA-accessible trails at Black Partridge Park in Metamora, IL. The area was once slated to become a golf course, but through the efforts of local advocates it remains a wooded area, home to several endangered and protected species.

Cronies Outdoor Adventure Tribe (Waupaca, WI)

Cronies Outdoor Adventure Tribe (COAT) will build the Bramble Loop Trail, an expansion of an existing system that hosts the annual Riverfest Ride. The Riverfest Ride helps raise funds for bike programs in the city of Waupaca.

CPSC, TARGET ANNOUNCE RECALL OF BACK TRAILS JR. BICYCLE HELMETS

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product: Back Trails Jr. Toddler, Youth and Child Bicycle Helmets Hazard: Some of these helmets do not meet CPSC safety standards for bicycle helmets, which poses a risk of riders suffering head injuries. The helmets were sold at: Target stores nationwide from April 2004 through July 2005 for about $13. Consumers should take the helmets away from children and eturn them to the nearest Target Store for a gift card in the amount of a full refund.

$10,000 BONUS ANNOUNCED FOR 2005 CONTINENTAL AIRLINES FIFTH AVENUE MILE RECORD BREAKERS

New York Road Runners have announced that a $10,000 bonus will be awarded for a men's or women's course record at the 2005 Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile Powered by "Four Minutes," an ESPN2 Film, on Saturday, September 24. In addition, the men's professional race will air live on ESPN News, returning the race to national television for the first time in more than a decade. For more information, check out:

One of the greatest track and field athletes in history, Carl Lewis, will be at Momentum, 2001 N. Clybourn in Chicago this Sunday, September 18 at 9 a.m. for a special fun run.
