Wehrman, Levin Pace Hop Around the Clock 8K
By Bob Richards April 14, 2003
They were hopping down the bunny trail at pretty fast
pace on Sunday morning in sun-drenched Lincoln Park.
Training partners Chris Wehrman and Scott Anderson led
from start to finish and finished 1-2 at the Hop Around the
Clock 8K, while Megan Levin cruised to victory on the
women's side in the race that attracted about 450 runners. Wehrman, 26, and Anderson, 29, both of Chicago, have
been training together since the beginning of November.
They said their plan for Sunday was to go out and run evenly
paced 5-minute splits through the first four miles. Wehrman,
who lost to Anderson by 10 seconds the previous week at
Oak Park's Race That's Good for Life 5K, said he wasn't
going to let that happen this time. "He (Anderson) can outkick me, so I knew if I wanted to
beat him I had to make my move with 1,200 meters to go,"
Wehrman said. And that's exactly what he did, winning in
24:46 to Anderson's 24:47. Janusz Sarnicki, 36, a top
Polish marathon runner living in Elmwood Park, placed
third in 25:55.
Levin, 32, of Chicago, was able to relax and moderate her
pace a bit because no other women were close. She was
able to finish comfortably in sixth place overall with a time of
29:41. "Of course, I would have liked to run faster," said Levin,
who gave the race a "Two Thumbs Up" and expressed her
appreciation to race organizers at Capri Events for having a
lead bicyclist for the women. Michelle Thom, 33, of Chicago, was women's runner-up
in 32:17, and Karen Wirtschoreck, 33, of Chicago, was third
in 34:05. The Easter Bunny made an appearance and was a big
hit with the kids on a warm April morning on the lakefront.
