Yastrebov, Mueckel claim men's and women's titles at 2005 Ford Ironman Wisconsin

MADISON, WI--Ukrainian Andriy Yastrebov won the first Ironman title of his career by claiming the men's title at the 2005 Ford Ironman Wisconsin held on Saturday, September 11 in Madison, WI.

Yastrebov dethroned two-time defending Ford Ironman Wisconsin Champion Dave Harju (Canada) with an overall time of nine hours, one minute and 34 seconds.

Temperatures measured upwards of 92 degrees during the event, but the Ukrainian's marathon time of 3:05:26 secured the men's title. Pete Jacobs (Australia) finished second with an overall time of 9:06:47. Jacobs' second-place finish marks the fourth time the Aussie has finished in the top five at an Ironman event in his career. Bernd Eichhorn (Germany) rounded out the top three in the men's field with an overall time of 9:08:47. Eichhorn finished ninth at the 2004 Ford Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon. Clas Bjorling (Sweden) finished fourth with an overall time of 9:10:31, and Luke Dragstra (Canada) finished fifth with a time of 9:21:03.

Germany's Ute Mueckel (photo) won the third Ironman of her career with an overall time of ten hours, 11 minutes and 22 seconds in taking the women's title.

Mueckel began her triathlon career in 1993 and has not won an Ironman event since 1997 when she won Ironman Switzerland. Lauren Jensen (New Berlin, WI) took second place for the second consecutive year at Ford Ironman Wisconsin. The Wisconsin native finished with an overall time of 10:18:30. Heather Haviland (Waukesha, WI) finished a career-best third place at the 2005 Ford Ironman Wisconsin. Haviland (10:24:21) previously finished eighth at the 2004 Ford Ironman Florida. Gabriela Loskotova (Czech Republic) finished fourth (10:34:04), and Marie Danais of Canada (10:39:34) finished fifth at the 2005 Ford Ironman Wisconsin. 2,076 triathletes from around the world competed at the 2005 Ford Ironman Wisconsin. Athletes competed for 80 qualifying spots to the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, as well as a $30,000 pro-prize purse.
