The two-day half marathon event organized by Running for Kicks is on
its way to a capacity crowd. "We are at 1,231 runners [registered] for the
Palos Bank Southwest Half Marathon," says Mel Diab, owner of
Running for Kicks (Palos Heights, IL).The event will feature food, a rock band and -- oh yeah -- Khalid
Khannouchi. For those of you born yesterday, Khannouchi is an icon in
the running world and a hero locally (he has won the Chicago Marathon
four times, breaking world records in three of those victories).
"He's such a nice guy. He's training for the Olympic Trials so he can't
run, but he's going to come down and help us out," says Diab.
Khannouchi will meet and sign autographs for fans on
Saturday, May 3. On the day of the race (Sunday), Khannouchi will be
running the last 300m of the course and allowing runners to take
pictures with him as they finish.
Registration will stop when the 2,000-runner capacity is reached.
