Five Chicago area men will compete in Olympic Trials Marathon
By Amy Rushlow November 2, 2007 Chicago Athlete
Chicago's Olympic dreams have been filled with thoughts of 2016.
That is, unless you're one of the five men running the Olympic Trials
marathon in New York City tomorrow.
On November 3, Jeff Jonaitis, Donnie Franzen, Chris Wehrman, Greg
Costello and Danny Mackey will run a five-loop marathon criterium
course in Central Park the day before the ING New York Marathon.
Watch the live start at 6:35 a.m. Central on NBC's Today Show.
Highlights will air at 1 p.m. Central on NBC. The complete race will be
streamed live on

Jeff Jonaitis, Tinley Park
Jonaitis has the fastest qualifying time of any Chicago area runner,
2:20:47 from the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon this past May.
A stress fracture in 2006 sidelined Jonaitis for six weeks. He started
training again in November for Green Bay.
Jonaitis told Chicago Athlete in August that he hoped to run near
2:16 and make the top 10 or 15 at the Trials.
He is sponsored locally by Universal Sole.
Donnie Franzen, Chicago
Donnie Franzen is one line underneath Jonaitis in the list of qualifying
times, running 2:20:49 at the 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon.
"I was very impressed with the camaraderie of the American group that I
had the privilege to be a part of including Chris Wherman and a number
of the Brooks Hanson's group who helped out with pacing duties," he
said after the race.
Franzen, Wehrman and Costello all train together with Chicago's Fleet
Feet Racing Team.
Chris Wehrman, Chicago
Wehrman has been a staple in the running community for years, both as
a top runner and member of the Chicago Area Runner's Association,
where he has won Runner of the Year multiple times. Wehrman also
coaches local athletes.
At the 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon Wehrman crossed the line
only seconds after Franzen, a training partner, to qualify in 2:20:55.
Wehrman has finished in the top three in the Banco Popular Chicago
Half Marathon almost every year since 2002. He races with the Nike
Central Elite Racing Team.
Greg Costello, Chicago
This has been a standout year for Costello. He won the Soldier Field 10-
Mile (50:53), Ravenswood Run 5K (15:00) and Banco Popular Chicago
Half Marathon (1:08:11).
Costello was planning to qualify for the Trials at The 2006 LaSalle Bank
Chicago Marathon but missed the 2:22 mark by 2 minutes, 24 seconds
because he went out too fast, he said. Costello tried again at the AT&T
Austin Marathon and qualified in 2:21:14.
Costello is a member of the Nike Central Elite Racing Team.
Danny Mackey, Tinley Park
Although Mackey was in Colorado for grad school when he qualified,
"Chicago is the hometown for sure," he says.Mackey ran 2:21:40 at the 2006 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, 11th
overall in a field of 5,000 men.
