Ringing Out '03, Bringing in '04!
By Bob Richards
December 30, 2003

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day have much to offer if you're looking for a good time before or after toasting 2004. For the best action, head to the lakefront. Here's the lineup of organized events:

NEW YEAR'S EVE (Wednesday)
Universal Sole Resolution Run 5K, 6 p.m., Lincoln Park on Cannon Drive between Diversey and Fullerton. This race is growing every year and will be the prelude to a smoke-free party at Goose Island Wrigleyville that will feature Uniderwater People. For information and registration information, call 773-868-0893 or go to www.universalsole.com.

Last Race of the Year 5K, 8 p.m., Heartland Cafe, 7000 N. Glenwood, Chicago. This event is on the laid-back side, but you still get a good workout before heading back to the Heartland Cafe for good food and cheer. Call 773-465-8005 or go to www.heartlandcafe.com

NEW YEAR'S DAY (Thursday)
New Years' Day 5K Run/Walk, 11 a.m., Lincoln Park at Stockton and LaSalle Dr, Chicago. This is a fun run with overall trophies, but no age-group competition. There is a raffle and refreshments afterward. Call 773-868-3010 or go to www.chicagoevents.com

Polar Bear Swim, noon, North Ave. Beach. You only have to go in the water for about 30 seconds, but you must submerge yourself to be "official," according to event organizer Leesa Drake. Bring warm clothes. No westsuits allowed! For information, click here.
