Illinois Swimmers Seek Olympic Glory
6-26-08
Chicago Athlete

Two swimmers with strong ties to the Chicago area will compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials starting Sunday, looking to punch their tickets for this summer's games in Beijing. Lake Forest High School and Northwestern graduate Matt Grevers and former Naperville resident and Rosary High School graduate Mary DeScenza will swim at the weeklong trials held in Omaha, Neb.

The 23-year-old Grevers holds three Illinois state high school records and has won three individual NCAA titles while at Northwestern. His best stroke is the backstroke, but he might have a better chance of making the U.S. squad competing freestyle.

DeScenza, also 23, won six state high school championships before moving on to an illustrious career at Georgia. The butterfly is her best event, but she will also compete in the backstroke and the freestyle.
