Emere, Chulakh Win Park Forest Scenic 10 Mile
September 6, 2005
From Bud James, Race Director

PARK FOREST, IL. - (September 5, 2005) - The 28th Park Forest Scenic 10 Mile in south suburban Chicago had another fine international competition this Labor Day, and in the men's race, the lead pack of nine hopefuls passed the first mile in 4:52. The group included Kenyans Reuben Chebii, Joshua Kemei, Henry Kipchirchir and Julius Rotich, Australian Kim Gillard, Alene Emere from Ethiopia and Americans Jim Jurcevich, Dan Held and Tim Keller. By mile 2, the lead group was whittled down to four and by mile 4, passed in 18:38, only two contenders remained: Emere and Chebii. The pair stayed together until less than a mile to go when Emere used a hard surge to break open the race. The Ethiopian hit the tape in 47 minutes and 24 seconds with Chebii second in 47:36.

In the women's race, a group of five were together just beyond five miles and the same five - Tatyana Chulakh from Russia, Kenyan Teresa Wanjiku (the 2002 Scenic 10 champ), Alemtschay Misganaw of Ethiopia, Kung Hee Lym of South Korea and Ukrainian Ilona Barvanova - would eventually finish within a stone's throw of each other 5 miles later.

At mile 7, after dropping Barvanova and Lym, Chulakh made her move and went on to a 16 second victory over Wanjiku, 55:37 to 55:53. It was her third win in the past three weeks (also America's Finest City Half-Marathon and then the Parkersburg Half). Only 8 seconds separated second thru fourth for one of the closest women's races in recent years. 28th Park Forest Scenic 10 Mile
