Revolution Cycling Center in St. Charles to Host "Girls Night Out" with Host Shawn Heidgen
March 3, 2005 From press release.
St. Charles, IL--(March 3, 2005)--Revolution Cycling
Centers, a unit of the St. Charles-based
Head Coach Partners, LLC., is hosting "Girl's Night Out", an
evening of exercise, relaxation, dinner,
and motivational conversation with TDS-Schwalbe
professional women's cyclist Shawn Heidgen on Friday,
March 11.Heidgen, who has been training with the team at its
Mallorca, Spain training camp since early February,
will return to the U.S. next week before heading off to races
across the country and the globe.
She is one of a very small and elite group of U.S. women to
be invited to race in the prestigious
Giro d'Italia bike race, nearly as well-known as the men's Le
Tour de France competition. Heidgen's message to women is: "You can do things you
never thought possible if you learn how
to control your thoughts and believe in yourself". While
directly applicable to an athletic skill in her
case, she knows full well how this message rings true for
anything a woman wants to accomplish.
She should know. Her coach is Robbie Ventura, former
member of the U.S. Postal Service men's
professional cycling team. Ventura is also the coach for
Floyd Landis, last year's U.S. Postal team
member that pulled Lance Armstrong to stage victories in
the 2004 Le Tour de France when he
captured his 6th win; the only time that has happened in the
101 years of the race.
While training with Ventura and an intense group of elite
men, Heidgen would sometimes soundly
put the men to shame with her cycling abilities. At first was
she scorned by some in the group as
the "only girl". That has become a fearful statement to these
humbler male cyclists.
The same motivation that drives her to be a top world athlete
drove her to overcome debilitating
pain that nearly destroyed her life when she became reliant
on some of the strongest painkillers that
can be prescribed. With the support of her husband and
trainer Karl, Shawn enrolled in a program
at the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis that showed her how to
take control and get her life back.
"The [Mayo] program changed my life in ways I could not
imagine", said Heidgen. "All I wanted
to do was to stop the pain. I never thought I could go beyond
that to become a professional athlete."
Girl's Night Out features a one-hour indoor ride with
Heidgen, followed by yoga and relaxation
techniques, dinner, videos, and lots of lively and serious
discussion about how she took her life to
the pinnacle of athletic success when all signs pointed to
doom and failure. Women of all physical abilities are encouraged to attend
and learn new ways of taking charge. No
cycling skills are necessary. There are no age restrictions,
but Heidgen recommends that young
women be at least old enough to engage in critical thinking.
Some of the concepts and stories of
her life may be better understood by the more mature youth. Event cost is $25 for Revolution members, $30 for
non-members. Space is limited and registration
is required. Visit
