'Save the Drome Cross Madness' (Cyclocross) Is Nov. 23 in Northbrook
November 18, 2003
Press release

Running, Run-Bike Events Also Part of Day's Schedule
Contributing to a worthy cause has never been more fun! Supporters of the Northbrook Velodrome will head off-road this Sunday, Nov. 23, for the Northbrook Bicycle Club "Save the 'Drome Cross Madness" on the nearby Anets Golf Course on Techny Road in Northbrook.

Highlighting the event is a series of cyclocross races, in which competitors ride off-road machines but are forced to dismount to run over barriers set strategically on the course. They then have to jump back on their bicycles, while moving, in a wild jumble of legs and hips and bikes.

New riders are welcome to try their hand at this tough discipline, with the men's C race going off at 10 a.m., with women's C and juniors shortly after.

Men's B and A races, age-group categories, and a women's A/B race are also scheduled, with a special Youth Race at 2:45 p.m. Mountain bikes and BMX bikes are welcome, as long as competitors remove bar ends and other such equipment.

Kicking off the day1s races is a running event, slated for 9 a.m. This "Steeple Cross" event will see competitors tackle the same course as the bikes, meaning they too will be jumping over 12-inch high barriers. The final event of the day, at 3:15, will combine the two sports in a "Dirty Double Cross," where one competitor runs while the other rides, switching at mandatory points along the course. The two-person teams must finish together to earn their place.

There will be no prize list for any races, with all proceeds going to the Save the Velodrome Fund. The Steeple Cross race cost $10; cyclocross races are $20; the youth race is $5; and the Dirty Double Cross is $40 per team.

No racing licenses are required for the cyclocross events and there is no preregistration. Racers under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian sign their insurance release.

Anets Golf Course is on Techny Rd., one mile west of Waukegan Rd. Techny Rd. is about a mile north of Willow Rd.

The Northbrook Bicycle Club is raising money to help the Northbrook Park District have the Velodrome resurfaced next year.
