Torres Brothers at Universal Sole Wed., Nov. 26
Press Release
Nov. 21, 2003
Chicago Athlete

Jorge and Edwardo Torres, two of Illinois' top distance runners and Olympic hopefuls, will be at Universal Sole Wednesday, Nov. 26, to kick off a fun run at 6:15 p.m., followed by a presentation and question and answer session at 7:15 p.m.

The former Wheeling High School standouts recently graduated from the University of Colorado, where they helped the Buffaloes win their first NCAA cross-country championship in 2001.

After winning three individual Illinois state high school cross-country championships, Jorge Torres (photo) enjoyed a stellar career at Colorado, winning the NCAA Division I cross-country title in a course record time of 29:04.7. In addition to his cross-country accomplishments, Jorge placed second in the 5,000-meters at the 2002 outdoor NCAA Track and Field Championships. He boasts a personal record of 13:24.56. As a professional runner, Torres placed third at the USA 2003 Track and Field Championships, earning him the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the World Championships. As the only American to make the 5,000-meter final, Torres placed 15th.

Edwardo Torres, the younger twin by 10 minutes, deserves just as much attention as his brother. He placed third at the USA Cross Country championships 12K in 2003. From there, he placed a laudable 51st at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Edwardo's niche seems to be the 10,000-meters, where he earned All-American status in 2002 and finished eighth at the 2003 USA Track and Field Championships with a time of 28:21.46.

As the newest distance running prodigies, the twins signed their first multi-year professional contract with Reebok in July, automatically becoming two of Reebok's premier and most promising athletes. Moreover, on Oct. 16, Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn honored the Torres brothers to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, calling them "role models for Hispanic youths and aspiring Olympic hopefuls everywhere."

Meet the twins at Universal Sole, 3254 N. Lincoln Ave. For more information, contact Universal Sole at 773-868-0893 or visit www.universalsole.com.
